Filing Taxes Yourself This Year?

January 30th, 2008 at 02:40 am

Are you filing your taxes yourself this year?

I have always prepared my own taxes each year. I have used TurboTax every single year.

This software has been extremely helpful and straightforward to use.

I have considered using TurboTax's competitor, TaxCut (by H&R Block), but I always back out because TurboTax is designed to automatically transfer all of last year's information over to this year's return.

(I wonder if TaxCut can auto transfer a return put together using TurboTax?)

If you have a very simple tax return and plan on using 1040EZ,

TurboTax provides their software and one federal tax filing for FREE!

Otherwise, there is a cost for the software, but it is reasonably priced for such a good software package.

I've never had a problem with a filing I have made with TurboTax.

I am sure it is the same for TaxCut software, but I have not used the product.

By the way, I usually look at the Staples or Office Depot sales ads this time of year before purchasing my TurboTax software. Usually, they will have a special - something like "Buy TurboTax and get a $10 gift card" deal. I like that! Last year, I ended up buying my software from Best Buy, and it came with a free wireless mouse. It is a great mouse! It was backordered and took over two months to get it, but they did ship it to me!

I use Turbotax Online, which skips the need for software, but it won't let me log on this year!! I can log on and see my previous years returns, but it won't let me log on to 2007! Very frustrating and customer service is no help!

Using HR block online. It's just like the software you buy in the store. If you earn less than a certain amount it's free.

I switched to TaxCut a few years ago when TurboTax was doing some shady stuff (spyware or something along those lines. I don't remember but dh was the computer guru and recommended Tax Cut instead). Anyway, I think that is worked out now. BUT just wanted to say they are all compatible with each other. Tax Cut is the same thing really and you can pull data from other software. So don't let that stop you!

Anyway, I use our professional software at work. Big Grin But I use TaxCut for family and friends.

I used TurboTax online this year for free. I should get our refunds next week! I have used TaxCut and found both to work sufficiently for us.

I used to use TurboTax online but I switched to TaxCut last year because I can file federal for free using it. I don't qualify for TurboTax online free filing. They seem to be the same quality wise. I got my refund a couple days ago.
