What was your first credit card?

February 11th, 2008 at 02:07 am

My first credit card was an Advanta VISA card with a really low limit.

How did I get it? I signed up for a free t-shirt during my first few weeks as a freshman on the campus at Purdue University.

What did I do with it when I received it? I went and charged it up!

It was so easy! Yet, it began a ten year mess of debt. I was a huge loser with credit cards. Maybe you have done better. Maybe not.

So my question today is:

What was YOUR first credit card?

AND

Did it help you or hurt you?

My first credit card was an MBNA with a 1500 credit limit (college). Needless to say, it lead to LOTS of credit which I poorly mismanaged. But, at least I'm learning! (Eight years later...)

my first credit card was a Virgin card, with 12% interest, a $2k limit. the first thing i bought was a saucepan and a colander! Smile that limit is now up to $7000, and i have my bf as an additional cardholder. i also have a store card and another credit card with another bank. i haven't ever had any touble with credit cards, and i generally use them to purchase large items and keep the money stashed in an ing account until the due date. i would say over nearly two years i have paid probably about $50 in interest the whole time, which is largely due to thinking the due date was a day after it really was! however, i have earned well over $200 in interest from putting money in ing accounts and then paying off the credit card at the end of the cycle. Smile so for me, it has been a good relationship with the cc's.

I don't remember. I got my first credit card over 40 years ago. I pay mine off each month.
