My VISA debit card number was stolen …

December 17th, 2007 at 04:53 pm

Last weekend, my lovely bride was Christmas shopping on-line. On Monday, I went to my bank's on-line site to make an on-line bill payment (I LOVE on-line bill payments!)

Here are some of the charges that I saw …

Now, I knew that she had been shopping on-line, but I didn't know that it was for a new spouse!!! Some of the fraudulent charges were from Match.com and Yahoo! Personals!

I called my bank, and they were fantastic! The person who used the card apparently used it as a credit card - they did not know my pin code. They immediately put a hold on the VISA check card and sent a new one to me. They have already reversed the charges and credited them back to my account.

So, I am now officially a fraud victim.

It makes me wonder how many readers have been a victim or know someone who has been a victim of this type of theft!

I had an unauthorized charge on a Visa CC last year. I knew it was fraud right away because I got a bill on a card that I never use. It got straightened out pretty painlessly.

Make sure you check your credit reports to be sure everything is in order.

the real questions, how did they get the number in the first place? do they know other information about you to do more damage?

Had that happen on my cc but they caught it before I did because it was so out of character. I never even got to see the fraudulent charges because we got to the second charged item and they decided it was all fraud, closed the account and sent a new card with a new number. I suspect mine was stolen by a waiter at a restaurant though since that is the only place the card had been used in the past 6 months. And people are paranoid about identity theft over the web...

debtfreeme - That's the question I can't answer in my case. I hadn't used the card for about a year. It never left my house. No new card got swiped from the mail. I have no clue how they got my number.

After I read this, I checked my card. This is a busy time of year and it would be easy to be distracted. I have read that restaurants are not always safe places. That you should never let your card out of your site. You have your 3 numbers on the back that they read and that's all they know. My credit card company said that restaurants in transient areas are known for this. They have such a large turnover in employees.

My debit card was compromised and apparently my DS and DIL have had theirs compromised also. Mine was caught by the bank fraud people the day it happened and the kids were notified and sent new ones before they even knew theirs was in danger. I'm glad you had it straightened out quickly! It is very frustrating and scary that people figure out ways to do this no matter how careful you are!

Do you think it was the "debit" factor instead of "credit"?

When we make an unusually large purchase (yes, my husband will go out and buy a $1,800 water storage tank) the bank calls me while he is waiting in line before approving!
