Net Worth - How do you stack up?

February 1st, 2008 at 09:44 pm

I ran across an interesting link the other day.

You type in your age and income, and it tells you how you stack up against your peers.

It is ALARMING to see how little Americans are saving!

How do you stack up? Check it out

Nicely ahead for my age and income, thankfully.

Surprisingly, three times higher than where I "should" be!

nance - It isn't where you "should" be. It is just where the average person is. Most probably "should" be a lot higher than they are.

Sadly, the median net worth for my age is about $2k.
(& up to age 35). That is just crazy if you ask me.

MEdian net worth about $100k, based on income. (Is that all ages? Yikes!)

Not much to compete with there. I think I am doing okay. I think we passed the $100k mark around age 25. Of course my income is much higher now too, which makes those medians sound more crazy.

I was surprised by the median net worth for my age group, too. Under 45K (35-44).

The low net worth for 25-34 isn't really that surprising to me. When I was nearing 30, my net worth was very much below zero. I had just over $100,000 in student loans and had recently bought a house. Even with a 20% downpayment, I still owed 80% of the value. We had some savings, but not nearly enough to balance out our debts.

Fascinating. For my age, I am way ahead, but for my income level, I'm only on par. That's actually pretty scary. For them. Even for me, my number is still way too low.
